This is the latest in eye-catching designs for the Galateo & Friends Signature range of Italian extra virgin olive oils. It is by the internationally acclaimed artist, Lazaro Rosa Violan and joins three other specially commissioned evoo bottle designs for this company. Lazaro opened his design studio in Barcelona in 2003 and since then has worked on numerous projects in 40 different countries.
Galateo is part of Casa Olearia Taggiasca which is based in Liguria in northern Italy. Their groves, planted with the local Taggiasca olives, are set on the steep terraces of the picturesque coastline of west Liguria. The land here is characterised by deep valleys which run deep into the interior allowing the sea breezes to reach the trees which help to give a delicate but complex flavour to the oil.
Also new to the Galateo range is Assolo 1. This is a very unusual late harvest oil, picked and pressed in May this year. When the sap starts to rise for the flowers at this time of the year it starts to take the chlorophyll from those olives which are left on the tree. This type of oil was known as Biancardo oil and only comes from the tops of the mountains. It is traditionally very pale in colour and very sweet in flavour, almost like butter.
Neither of these oils are on sale in the UK but both will be available from the Galateo & Friends website shortly and the Lazaro Rosa Violan designed bottle is on preview sale in Rinascente stores.
